And Another Grr!

Some of you may recall that I didn't much care for the merger of Daytons and Marshall Fields. You might also recall that I was optimistic about the sale of Marshall Fields to May Departments stores -- hoping beyond hope that it may become a Famous Barr.

But alas, it looks like Federated is going to buy May, which means it's going to turn my once beloved Daytons into a gawddamned Macy's. FEH and double FEH.

Macy's was fine when that was the best I could do in the mid-level department store department stuck out in the armpit of the San Francisco Bay with no transportation and no freaking money. But it's a far cry from being anything remotely stylish OR of high quality. If I thought Marshall Fields had sucked the youth out of Daytons, I can't wait to see this watered down even more as the prices go up.

I've been doing most of my shopping at Herbergers these days. It's not Daytons... it's more like Powers or Donaldsons. Not great, but decent and priced accordingly. Bleah.

Today's Strib article points out the one bright spot in the whole thing. This may finally kill off the Marshall Field name.

Me, I just say "meh". I haven't bought anything in there since the first name change. I miss Dayton's, but in my mind, it's been gone for years anyhow.

Pink and I were down there last Sunday, and there's already big sales and blocked off areas. I'm pretty peeved with MF, but I would hate to see the big downtown store close. Popovers...
